The flamingo spectacle everyone associates with Nakuru mostly lives an hour further north these days. Rising water pushed the big flocks to Lake Bogoria, where over a million birds can line the shore in season, wading between steam vents and live geysers. It is one of the strangest, most photogenic corners of the Rift Valley, and hardly anyone goes.

We pair it with Lake Nakuru, which keeps the big game side of the weekend: black and white rhino, Rothschild’s giraffe and tree-climbing lions. Our guides check the week’s flamingo counts before departure and route day two wherever the birds actually are.
