You have spent six days watching wildebeest cross the Mara River and falling asleep to hyena calls outside your tent. Now you want warm water, a cold drink at sunset, and nowhere to be at 6 a.m. A Seychelles safari beach extension is one of the best ways to close out a Kenya honeymoon, if you plan the logistics right.
We get this question every month from couples booking through Valley Safaris. Most of the advice online is written by generic Indian Ocean travel agencies who have never routed a client through Wilson Airport at dawn. Here is the honest version, from the Kenya side.
Why a Seychelles Safari Beach Extension Works After Kenya
A safari runs on structure. Early wake-up calls, long game drives, packing up camp every two or three nights. It is thrilling, but it is not relaxing. Couples who add a beach leg get the contrast they actually want: privacy, slow mornings, and a setting built for celebrating rather than spotting leopards.
Seychelles specifically suits honeymooners who want scenery without crowds. Its granite boulders, private beaches, and small guest counts feel different from the busier resort strips of Mombasa or even parts of Zanzibar. It costs more. We will not pretend otherwise.
Seychelles vs Mauritius vs Zanzibar vs Mozambique
Every couple asks us to rank these four. There is no single right answer, but the numbers make the trade-offs clear.
| Destination | Flight time from Nairobi | Distance | Indicative cost per person, 4 nights mid-range | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seychelles (Mahé) | Around 3 hours 20 minutes | Approx. 2,600 km | USD 1,400 to 2,200 | Privacy, dramatic beaches, splurge honeymoon |
| Mauritius | Around 4 hours 30 minutes, often via a connection | Approx. 3,500 km | USD 1,100 to 1,800 | Resort variety, golf, spas, longer flight tolerance |
| Zanzibar | Around 1 hour 50 minutes | Approx. 700 km | USD 700 to 1,200 | Budget-conscious couples, shortest add-on |
| Mozambique (Bazaruto/Vilanculos) | Usually a connection via Johannesburg | Approx. 2,000 km | USD 900 to 1,500 | Diving-focused couples, quieter archipelago |
These are indicative mid-range figures for accommodation, transfers, and flights, not exact quotes. Actual pricing depends on season and the resort tier you choose. If budget is the deciding factor, it is worth reading our breakdown of real Kenya safari costs for a couple alongside these numbers, since the safari leg usually costs more than the beach leg anyway.
If Seychelles feels like a stretch, it is worth comparing it directly against a Zanzibar beach extension, which cuts flight time to under two hours and typically saves USD 500 to 800 per couple.
Which Seychelles Island to Choose
Seychelles is 115 islands, but honeymooners really choose between three.
Mahé is the main island, home to the international airport and the capital, Victoria. It has good beaches like Beau Vallon, but it is the least private of the three. Good for one night on arrival or departure, not the whole trip.
Praslin is quieter and greener, with Anse Lazio regularly named one of the best beaches in the world. It is a 15-minute domestic flight or a 1-hour ferry from Mahé. Most mid-range and luxury resorts sit here.
La Digue has no airport. You reach it by boat from Praslin, about 30 minutes. Ox carts and bicycles replace most cars. Anse Source d’Argent, with its pink granite boulders, is the postcard shot everyone wants. It is small, romantic, and best for two or three nights, not a full week.
Our usual recommendation for a honeymoon extension: two nights on Praslin, two nights on La Digue. It gives you both the resort comfort and the barefoot, low-key island feel.

Best Time of Year to Combine Kenya and Seychelles
Kenya’s safari calendar and Seychelles’ weather calendar do not perfectly overlap, but there is a strong window.
July through September is the Mara migration season and also dry, sunny weather in Seychelles. This is peak pricing on both ends, so book six to nine months ahead.
Late December to February works well too. The Mara has good general game viewing, calving season is underway in the southern Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, and Seychelles is warm with occasional short showers.
Avoid October and November if possible. It is Seychelles’ wetter shoulder season, and the Mara migration has usually moved back into Tanzania.
How to Get From Kenya to Seychelles
This is where most generic guides go vague, so here is the real routing.
Your safari leg likely starts or ends on a light aircraft from a bush airstrip like Keekorok or Ol Kiombo in the Masai Mara, landing at Wilson Airport in Nairobi. Your international flight to Seychelles departs from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), roughly 30 to 45 minutes away by road depending on traffic. Build in at least three hours between flights, and check our guide on connecting between JKIA and Wilson Airport if this is your first time managing that transfer.
Kenya Airways operates the main direct route between Nairobi and Mahé, with flight time around 3 hours 20 minutes. Frequency shifts by season, so confirm exact days when you book, since Kenya Airways has adjusted this route’s schedule before. If direct flights are not convenient on your dates, connecting through Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines is a reliable backup, though it adds two to three hours.
How Many Days to Allocate
For a two-week trip, we generally suggest 7 to 8 days on safari and 5 to 6 days in Seychelles. That gives you time for at least two safari areas, such as the Masai Mara and Amboseli, plus enough beach time to actually unwind rather than just arrive and leave.
If you only have 10 days total, cut the safari to 5 nights in one location, like the Mara, and keep 4 nights in Seychelles. Do not compress Seychelles below 3 nights. Two of those days will be spent on transfers and settling in.

Cost and Pricing Tiers
Budget tier: Domestic Mahé or Praslin hotels, shared transfers, around USD 200 to 300 per person per night.
Mid-range: Boutique resorts like Le Domaine de La Réserve on Praslin or La Digue Island Lodge, around USD 350 to 550 per person per night.
Luxury: Four Seasons Resort Seychelles on Mahé, Constance Ephelia, or North Island, from USD 700 upward per person per night, with North Island running considerably higher for full villa buyouts.
Compare that to Mauritius, where properties like Constance Belle Mare Plage or Shangri-La Le Touessrok offer similar luxury for roughly 20 to 30 percent less, largely because Mauritius has more resort inventory and stronger flight competition.
Where to Stay: Sample Pairings by Budget
For the safari leg, we often pair Angama Mara or Governors’ Camp in the Mara with Le Domaine de La Réserve on Praslin for a mid-range trip. For a full splurge, Ol Pejeta’s Kicheche Laikipia Camp pairs beautifully with a few nights at North Island or the Four Seasons Seychelles.
Sample Itinerary
Days 1 to 3: Masai Mara, game drives from a tented camp like Governors’ Camp. Days 4 to 5: Amboseli, elephants against Kilimanjaro. Day 6: Fly to Nairobi, connect JKIA to Mahé. Days 7 to 8: Praslin, snorkeling and beach time. Days 9 to 10: La Digue, cycling and Anse Source d’Argent. Day 11: Fly home via Mahé.
Activities in the Seychelles
Snorkeling at Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette needs no boat, just a mask and fins. Diving around Praslin’s reef sites suits couples who got their PADI certification before the trip. If you spend a night on Mahé, the Sainte Anne Marine National Park near Victoria is worth adding on too. Island hopping by day boat between Praslin, La Digue, and Curieuse is a good half-day activity, and Curieuse itself has giant tortoises you can walk among.
The Valley Safaris Difference
We plan the Kenya leg first, because that is what we know best and where most of your budget goes. Then we build the Seychelles or Mauritius add-on around your actual flight connections, not a generic package. Every itinerary we send includes real flight times between your bush camp and JKIA, honest pricing tiers instead of one padded quote, and a fallback plan if a light aircraft is delayed and you risk missing your international connection. We have routed this exact combination for dozens of couples, and we tell you plainly when Zanzibar makes more financial sense than Seychelles.
