We built this itinerary the hard way, by taking our own children on safari and fixing everything that went wrong. So: no drive longer than four hours, an activity at every stop where kids do something rather than watch something, and the Masai Mara saved for the second half, when everyone has found their rhythm.
The first days are all participation, from bottle-feeding orphaned elephants in Nairobi to drifting past hippos on Lake Naivasha and walking among giraffe on Crescent Island, where there are no predators and small legs can run. Then three unhurried nights in the Mara with pool breaks in the heat of the day. Family rooms or connecting tents throughout; it runs best with children five and up.
Bottle-feeding time at the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, then hand-feeding giraffe at the Giraffe Centre. An early night at your Nairobi hotel.
A short two-hour drive, lunch by the lake, and an afternoon boat ride metres from yawning hippos.
A morning walking among giraffe and zebra on predator-free Crescent Island, then on to Nakuru for an evening game drive.
Rhino and flamingoes before breakfast, then the drive to the Mara with a first evening game drive on arrival.
A morning drive with our junior wildlife checklist, pool and downtime through the heat, and a shorter afternoon drive.
A flexible full day for big cats and river hippos, with a picnic breakfast in the bush.
A morning with a Maasai community where the kids meet kids, then a final sundowner drive.
The drive back to Nairobi, with day rooms arranged before evening flights.
