Nowhere else in Kenya do you watch big game from an armchair at midnight. The Ark sits over a floodlit salt lick deep inside Aberdare National Park, and elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog and the occasional black rhino walk in all night while you watch from the viewing decks. Ask for the buzzer and the staff will wake you for the rare stuff.

Around that one unforgettable night we build a proper highland safari: waterfalls pouring off 3,000-metre moorland, bamboo forest full of colobus, and air cool enough for a fireplace. It is the perfect contrast to a plains safari, under three hours from Nairobi, and most of our guests run it back-to-back with the Mara or Samburu.

Tour Plan

1 Nairobi to Aberdare and The Ark

Morning drive into the highlands with lunch at the base lodge, then the afternoon transfer into the park to check in at The Ark above its floodlit waterhole. The wildlife comes to you through the night, and the room buzzer wakes you if a rhino or something rarer walks in.

2 Moorland, waterfalls and forest

A full day on the high circuit, from Karuru Falls dropping off the moorland edge to colobus troops in the bamboo forest, before a fireside dinner back at the lodge.

3 Forest game drive and return

One more drive through the cedar forest on the way out, then back to Nairobi by mid-afternoon.
