Most roundups you will find lump Kenya in with Botswana, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia, giving it two or three lines in a 20-property list. That is not much use if you are actually planning a Kenya trip this year. So here is the whole picture, plus what those bigger lists tend to skip. Why 2026 Is a Big Year for Kenya Lodge Openings
Kenya’s conservancy model, private land bordering national parks and reserves, has matured over the past decade. Landowners and operators are now confident enough to rebuild aging camps rather than patch them, and international hotel groups are moving into conservancies for the first time. Marriott’s dual signing for The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott safari camps, announced in February 2025, is one sign of that shift. So is Wilderness’s decision to rebuild Little Governors’ Camp from the ground up rather than simply refresh it.

The Lodges, Region by Region
Maasai Mara: Wilderness Mara. This is the headline opening of the year. Little Governors’ Camp, a Mara Triangle institution for decades, closed for a full rebuild and returns on 1 June 2026 as Wilderness Mara. It sits at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment with access to both banks of the Mara River. Twelve tented suites face a seasonal marsh, each with an outdoor shower and a raised deck. There is a spa, a gym, and a photographic studio, a genuinely new touch for the Mara. Governors’ Balloon Safaris still flies from camp, so the classic sunrise balloon ride over the Triangle has not gone anywhere. A second, smaller property, Wilderness Mara Villas, debuts in February 2026. It is an exclusive-use villa on a quiet bend of the Mara River, better suited to a family or small group buying out the whole camp.
Amboseli: Kitirua Plains Lodge. A&K Sanctuary opened this 13-suite lodge on 1 June 2026, on a private 128-acre concession bordering Amboseli National Park, about ten minutes from the main gate. Suites run close to 1,300 square feet, with indoor and outdoor showers and private verandas facing the plains. The design leans on Maasai building principles, curved walls, rooflines that follow the land, plaster mixed with soil from the site. It is solar-powered and built for passive cooling rather than air conditioning units. Rates start around 840 US dollars per person per night. Mount Kenya and Solio: JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve. This is Marriott’s first Kenya safari camp, built inside the 45,000-acre Solio Game Reserve between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare range. Twenty tented suites come with plunge pools and indoor-outdoor living space, and guests can visit the Solio Rhino Orphanage as part of the reserve’s rhino conservation work. It is all-inclusive from 1,499 US dollars per person per night, with airport transfers from Nanyuki Airstrip included. It can also be booked through Marriott Bonvoy points, which is unusual for a safari camp and worth knowing if you have a points balance sitting idle.
Laikipia: Amazing Laikipia Camp. A small, six-tent camp that opened in early 2026 on a 33,000-acre stretch of wilderness, with raised platforms in indigenous forest overlooking a permanent waterhole. It is the sister property to the well-regarded Amazing Mara Camp, built on the same intimate, small-footprint model. South Rift: Shompole Camp. Great Plains Conservation returns to the Nguruman Escarpment south of Lake Magadi with a rebuilt, eight-tent camp opening mid-2026. This is genuinely off the standard circuit, community-owned land with a revenue agreement tied to the Shompole Community Trust, and an expanded anti-poaching partnership. With only eight tents and no plans to expand, it fills up fast whenever Great Plains opens a new season.
Samburu: we could not confirm a major new lodge opening in Samburu for 2026. If Samburu is on your list, this is actually good news. It means established camps there are not competing with a flashy new opening this year, and you can book them at normal rates and known quality. Pair a stay at Samburu with a new Laikipia or Solio property for a route that mixes proven and new.
New Lodge or Established Camp: What Changes in the First Season
A brand-new camp is exciting, but it comes with real trade-offs in its opening months. Staff are new to the property and to each other, guest reviews do not exist yet, and soft-launch pricing sometimes creeps up once demand becomes clear. Occasionally there is finishing work still underway on a spa or a second wing.

None of this means skip the new camp. It means go in with eyes open. Wilderness Mara, for instance, replaces a camp with decades of goodwill and a team that trained under the same ownership group, so its opening-season risk is lower than a lodge built from scratch. Kitirua and Shompole are closer to true first seasons, which is part of their appeal if you want to be among the first guests through the door.
Pricing and Budgeting for a 2026 Kenya Safari
Beyond the room rate, budget for park and conservancy fees. Maasai Mara National Reserve charges non-residents 100 US dollars per adult per day through 30 June 2026, rising to 200 US dollars from 1 July 2026. Amboseli National Park charges 90 US dollars per adult per day for non-residents. Private conservancies like Solio, Laikipia’s Ol Pejeta and Lewa, and the Shompole Conservancy bundle their own land fees into the nightly rate, so check whether a quoted price is truly all-inclusive.
How Many Nights, and How to Pair New With Classic
