Best Time to Visit Kenya: the Seasons, Mapped Park by Park

Kenya has no winter, only rhythms of rain. The best time to visit Kenya comes down to two dry windows (June to October, then January to February) separated by two rainy seasons, and the map below shows how that plays out park by park: tap any boundary for its own best months. The honest secret of Kenyan travel is that almost every month works somewhere.

Season map: when each park peaks

The five major safari blocks are drawn with their best months in each popup. The pattern to notice: the whole country shares the June-October dry season, the Mara adds the migration on top of it, and the lakes stay good year-round.

Our honest take on the low season

We will not pretend April in the Mara matches September. But the long rains have real rewards: rates drop by a third or more, lodges empty out, and the light after a storm is the best of the year. If your dates land in the rains, aim for Nakuru, Naivasha and Laikipia, which handle wet weather best, and keep the itinerary flexible. If your dates are open, book September, and book it early; so does everyone else.

Best time to visit: questions

What is the single best month to visit Kenya?

September, if we had to pick one: the migration is in the Mara, the weather is dry, and the August school-holiday peak has just eased. February is the best-kept-secret alternative.

When is the wildebeest migration in Kenya?

The herds usually hold in the Maasai Mara from late July to October, with river crossings throughout that window. The rest of the year they are in Tanzania’s Serengeti.

What months should I avoid?

April and May are the heart of the long rains: some camps close and black-cotton roads bog down. It is also the cheapest, greenest, emptiest Kenya, so ‘avoid’ depends on your priorities.

Is Christmas a good time for a Kenya safari?

Yes: late December falls in a dry, green window with excellent game viewing. It is a popular period, so lodges price high and book out months ahead.
