We have been booking honeymoons in Kenya for years, and we watch the same suites sell out and the same dates fill up. Here is the real answer to when to book honeymoon safari, not the generic “book early” line every travel blog repeats.
The Short Answer: When to Book Honeymoon Safari (9 to 12 Months Out)
For most Kenya honeymoon safaris, 9 to 12 months ahead is the sweet spot. That gives you first pick of honeymoon suites, the best flight fares into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and time to build a proper itinerary instead of settling for whatever is left.
Book any later and you can still travel. You just lose choice. The camps do not run out of rooms. They run out of the two or three romantic ones with the best view, the outdoor bath, or the private deck.
Why the Great Migration Changes the Timeline
If your heart is set on watching wildebeest cross the Mara River, push your booking window to 12 to 18 months. The river crossings cluster from late July through October, peaking in August and September, and camps along the Mara River like Angama Mara and Mara Serena Safari Lodge fill their honeymoon suites first.
We have had couples email us in April asking for a September migration trip and we could still find them a good camp. But their choice was two lodges, not fifteen. If migration season is non-negotiable for your honeymoon, book by the previous November.
Christmas, New Year and Easter Need Even More Lead Time
Kenyan camps treat 20 December through 3 January like a second peak season, on top of migration season. Prices rise, and small owner-run camps with six or eight rooms sell out a full year ahead. Easter week runs a close second, especially for couples combining a Mara safari with a Diani Beach extension.
If your wedding date lands you in Kenya over a holiday period, start planning as soon as you set the date. Waiting until 6 months out for a Christmas honeymoon safari usually means a longer drive to reach an available camp, not the one closest to the airstrip.
Adding Gorilla Trekking? Book Even Earlier
Some honeymoon couples pair a Kenya safari with gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda. This is the one piece that needs the longest lead time of the whole trip. Rwanda issues a limited number of gorilla permits per day, priced at USD 1,500 per person, and popular months like June through September and December through February book out 9 to 12 months ahead. Uganda permits run closer to USD 800 and have a little more breathing room, but 6 months ahead is still wise.
Build your Kenya itinerary around confirmed gorilla permit dates, not the other way round. Permits are the fixed point.
Honeymoon Suites Are Limited, Not Just Rooms
This is the part generic booking guides miss. A camp is not fully booked or empty. It has a small number of rooms built for two, with the extras honeymooners actually want: a private plunge pool, a separate sala for sundowners, or a bath positioned for the view.

Rates and suite counts change with the season and any renovations, so treat these as indicative ranges to plan against, and confirm exact figures when you book. The pattern holds either way. Mara camps with two or three honeymoon suites sell those specific rooms first, often before the rest of the camp fills.
What’s Still Bookable at 6, 3 and 1 Month Out
Couples ask us constantly whether it is too late. Often it is not, it just changes what is realistic.

If your trip lands in a shoulder month like March, April, May or November, you have real flexibility even close to travel. If you want migration season or a holiday date, treat 6 months out as your last comfortable window, and read up on whether a last-minute safari deal is still realistic before you count on one.
Is It Cheaper to Book a Safari Honeymoon Early or Late?
Early booking is usually cheaper, not more expensive. Camps release honeymoon suites at standard rates first, then raise prices as availability tightens. Last-minute deals exist, but they tend to appear in shoulder months on rooms nobody else wanted, not on the private-pool suite you have been dreaming about.
There is one exception. Some lodges run genuine honeymoon specials, like a free night on a 5-night stay or a complimentary sundowner picnic, and these often need to be requested at the time of booking rather than added later. Ask about them directly when you book instead of assuming they are automatic.
Choosing Between Samburu and the Masai Mara
Timing also depends on where you go. The Mara books up faster and costs more in peak season. Samburu, roughly 325 km north of Nairobi and about a 6-hour drive or a 1-hour flight from Wilson Airport, runs on a gentler booking curve and often has honeymoon suites available even 3 to 4 months out.

How Long Should Your Honeymoon Safari Be?
For a first safari honeymoon, we recommend 7 to 10 nights across two or three camps. Two nights is not enough to settle into a place, and five camps in ten days turns into a packing exercise instead of a honeymoon. A typical structure looks like 3 nights in the Masai Mara, 3 nights in Samburu, and 3 nights on the coast.
Fewer camps, longer stays. That is the honeymoon version of a safari itinerary, and it also gives you more room to negotiate a good honeymoon suite rate at each stop.
Adding a Beach Extension
Most Kenya honeymoon safaris end with a few nights at the coast, usually Diani Beach, about a 1-hour flight from the Masai Mara via Nairobi. Beach lodges book up less aggressively than safari camps, so 4 to 6 months ahead is usually enough, except over Christmas and Easter when the same early-booking rules apply.
Booking your beach nights alongside your safari, rather than as an afterthought, also makes it easier to secure connecting flights on the same day instead of an overnight stop in Nairobi.
